Overproof Bakes was born out of a mother’s love to create a rum cake to meet her daughter’s expectations.
The story begins in 2021. After baking a traditional birthday cake for my daughter’s 30th birthday, she upped the ante and asked for the next one to be a rum cake! Pleasing my daughter is no easy task …. she loves sweet treats and is extremely fussy. My first attempt at this traditional Jamaican treat was OK but could certainly, even by my personal standards be improved. I persisted, baking multiple cakes, testing them on my Jamaican friends, tweaking recipes, until I finally found the perfect recipe and just like that, Overproof Bakes was born.
My daughter encouraged me to set up a shop on Etsy to share my rum cakes with the Nation. Since then, I’ve engaged with a varied customer base this includes my cakes appearing on various TV shows and soaps – who even knew they used real cakes in these scenes!? My customer base continues to grow and includes people who had never previously tried Jamaican rum cakes, to people who regularly devour them as the treat of the day.
As my business continues to grow and go from strength to strength, I have my daughter Keshia to thank for the push and giving me the confidence to pursue this and share it with you all!
